There were many who claimed that we should have stayed out of the war, but Japan bombed us in Pearl Harbor. They wanted to control the Pacific and were planning to TAKE Hawaii even though their "peace negotiations" assured us that their imperialistic aggression would stop once they had acquired the western islands. Then we have Germany, which had already taken over most of Europe, at least the most productive nations, and were working on England. Germany was gaining strength as it took over the resources of other nations, do you think they would have stopped? Once they had all of the production capability of Europe, Hitler's long term plans were to take over the world. Should we have sat by and said that since Hitler didn't really come after us directly, we should just let him do whatever he wanted? Did we have an obligation to defend the defensless. Hitler's Germany murdered 6,000,000 Jews just because they were born as Jews. Is there any part of your morality that thinks we should turn our back on that kind of behavior? And by the way, Germany DID attack some of the American transport ships that were delivering supplies to England, even before we declared war. Yes, we were supplying England with arms and other supplies, but Germany had to realize that by sinking our ships we WOULD become directly involved in the European war. It would have been better for Germany to leave our ships alone, let them deliver supplies and keep our soldiers out of the war rather than sink U.S. transport ships and assure our participation. There are similarities to today. Do we wait until Sadam and Islam are large and powerful before we take them on? Right now, Islam only wants to drive Israel into the sea and are trying to frighten the rest of the world to the point that we will no longer defend the right for Israel to exist. But as soon as they kill the Jewish people of the world, they'll want to kill everyone who refuses to convert to Islam. That's their stated objective. Do we wait until they're strong enoug to actually do that or do we defend the Kurds and others who are being murdered by Islam? If the terrorists lay down their arms, there will be no more terror. If Israel lays down their arms there will be no more Israel.

During the Second World War's first two years (1939-1941), many Americans in fact believed that the United States should not become involved in the war. The fundamental reasons for this position were that America had too many domestic problems to resolve and that the war was an 'European affair.' Other Americans argued in favor of joining the war, yet the entire debate ended with the surprise-attack by the Japanese (in December of 1941) on America's naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
