After the outbreak of the war at Fort Sumter, both Union and Confederates hurried to field armies in the northwester corner of Virginia.

A Union Army under McClellan pushed eastward toward Cumberland in Maryland.

At the same time a Confederate Army of 5,000 troops, stationed northward at Beverly. An advanced unit of them reached Philippi, in what is now West Virginia on June 3, 1861, but they were routed by an enveloping attack of the Federals,
