The Confederacy emerged because the Southern states seceded from the Union. Southern states wanted slavery and their way of life to remain and formed the Confederacy as a way to preserve this.

The South didn't have the manufacturing infrastructure that the North did in large metropolitan areas like Chicago and New York. Also, the North had a population advantage because of the ongoing influx of immigrants, who most frequently came into the country at large port cities, such as New York, that the South just didn't have. The South's loss was inevitable because they could not replace lost troops, while the North could easily do so.

Inability to agree on major and minor issues. There were many personal conflicts between politicians. Cabinet positions changed hands regularly. There were disagreements on total national strategy. Governors were selfish with their own resources ( both men and material). They wanted their resources to be used in the defense of their own state, not a national cause. For instance, Georgia had enough food to feed the entire country, but Lee's army starved in Virginia. Perhaps most of all, Jefferson Davis fancied himself a general on par with Napoleon. Davis micromanaged the war from an armchair in Richmond. He let personal likes and dislikes determine who his field generals were to be ( just like Lyndon Johnson did for the Vietnam War).
