On the 23 June 1914, the Archduke Franz Ferdinard heir to the austro- Hugarian throne was shot dead at Sarajevo in Bosina. The assassin was Gavrilo Princip, a 23 year old Serbian nationlist.

The Austro-Hugarian government blamed Serbia for the assassination and sought to punish and weaken it. A weak Serbia would no longer be able to act as a force against Austrian authority over the many nationlities that lived within the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Austro-Hugarian declared war on Serbia on the 2nd July 1914.

By the 4th of August 1914 Europe was at war, as Britain readied itself to declare war on Germany in August 1914, future Australian prime minister Andrew Fisher promised that Australia will stand behind Britain to help defend.
