On September 1, 1939 Hitler sent troops into Poland after repeatedly being told NOT to try and take over neighboring countries by England and France. On this date they had had enough and formally declared war on Germany September 3, 1939.

Because that's when Germany invaded Poland, and other countries finally decided to try to stop Nazi Germany from conquering any more countries (they had already conquered Austria and Czechoslovakia).

However, France and England did little to actually stop Germany until well into 1940, which Poland long saw as a betrayal.

The world was plunged in War because Japan and German Nazis caused the war by their aggressive actions.

In what is known as the second Sino-Japanese War, Japan had been going to other places to invade them and steal their raw materials. They murdered 100,000 innocent Chinese in Manchuria. The world was furious with the Japanese. The US chose to place an oil embargo on Japan and would not sell oil to them at Hawaii or any other port until they stopped their invasion tactics.

The Germans began taking nations that did not belong to them: Austria, the Sudetenland and the Rhineland. Then they invaded and attacked Poland on September 1, 1939. This was a clear violation of the Versailles Treaty that forbid them from building up a military force and using aggressive actions.

The Brits and the French declared war on the Germans after Poland was attacked.

The Japanese chose to destroy the US Naval fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7th, 1941. The next day the US joined the other nations in the war and declared war on Japan. Six days later Adolf Hitler declared war in the US. The rest is history.

How the second world war started was Great Britain and France just tried to simply appease Hitler and his ambitions to hopefully prevent a war. So basically Hitler got to do what he wanted. In 1939 the German army invaded Poland which started the war.

On 1 September 1939, German troops attacked Poland. On 3 September 1939, Britain and France responded by declaring war on Germany. Russia then invaded Poland from the east and then various other countries declared war. Germany then invaded Norway, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg and France and Russia annexed Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Eventually, most of the world's countries were engaged in conflict, with the United States joining in on 8 December 1941 after a Japanese attack on US bases in Hawaii the previous day.
