If you're talking about the Titanic, the moon was not out that night, the only natural light source was the stars. Therefore the officers could barely see the sillhouette of the iceburg, it was just a big black figure with the stars behind it making it visible.

I have been to a Titanic exhibit.

The truth is,the captain was being stupid,he was 1)Going to fast 2) was warned about the icebegs.

but he did not slow down. if they were going the advised speed,then maybe, they might have seen the iceberg soon enough to safely turn.
