The Holocaust is relevant because it shows how insidiously modern people can be taken in a manupulated by their leaders into performing unspeakable crimes. We should be vigilent abut this in our own society and make sure the checks and balances and our rights and freedoms aren't being eroded.

What are some good questions to ask a Holocaust survivor?

If you could talk to Hitler on a level playing field, what would you say to him? Who do you feel is most responsible for the holocaust? (if at concentration camp) who liberated the camp you were at? Before ww2 were there any descrimintation to Jewish people?

Why Holocaust survivor's stories are important?

It is truly said that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it and the holocaust is something that must never be allowed to happen again. There are people in this world who believe that the holocaust never actually happened. Oh, a few Jews were probably killed, the rest simply left Germany. The gypsies were also persecuted and even some Catholics, all in all, it was not a big deal. These people must be confronted. They must not be allowed to spew their lies and hatred unchallanged, a hatred that is taught from generation to generation. Recording the stories of the holocaust survivors is but one way of countering the lies of those who would deny history. The above answer is concerned with the issue of Holocaust denial, not with the question, which is primarily about the personal (psychological) need of survivors to talk about their experiences. (It asks about the importance of 'telling', not recording). It's part of the attempt to come to terms with their sufferings. Answer I feel it's important for survivors to record their stories, for two main reasons; 1. By talking about it, they will find that they will get an inner peace. Their talking about it will act as a kind of 'catharsis', and help them at least in part. 2. Again by recording their stories, it may, make people think, and understand that Evil will only win, IF good men/women remain silent. Look around you right now! Nothing has changed for Evil men are still out there and are still killing men, women and children, but not in the massive numbers. Record every experience, and by talking about it all, those who died and have no voice, will not be forgotten, even if their names are not known to us.

Why did they open fire at fort Sumter?

To assert that Charleston harbour was Confederate territory. Also to make the point that Confederate war-talk was not just talk, as some people thought it was.

What did Hitler think of the Holocaust?

A disgusting act which isn't discussed enough. Everyone knows 6 million Jews died, but I've never heard anyone discuss the 5 million others who did as well. Communists, POW's, gypsies, homosexuals, mentally and physically handicapped... 11 million died in the Holocaust, kind of a sad fact that it just goes to show no one cares about the minorities... which is why the event happened in the first place.I think it was very sad. I can't believe human beings would do this to one another. I don't like to talk about it because it makes me very sad. My grandpa was a Jew during the Holocaust, but luckily he lived in Canada.1. The Holocaust was real and resulted in the death of millions of people just like you,2. It was horrible, horrible, horrible, and generated from sick, insane minds. Hitler was demonstrably psychotic.Yes, it was real . . . the Germans by their very natures were fanatic keepers of records and diaries of all their activities. Thier own records prove the fact.

Should you teach the new generation about the Holocaust?

Certainly! It's a huge part of history. I still can't understand how some people don't believe it really happened. It was the most tragic atrocity that ever took place. See documentaries. read about it, and lastly...talk with a "survivor."
