The French were absolutely not afraid to fight the Germans in WWI, but quite enthousiastic at the thought. Despite suffering heavy losses (more than 1.5 million people) they kept on fighting.
They suffered again the same losses in the beginning of WWII, due to outdated tactics that led to whole infantry regiments being slaughtered by Germans while they protected the reimbarkment of the British Expeditionary Force.
In contrast, the US embarked late in both wars to protect their economical interest. In WWII, it carpet-bombed French towns, killing more French civilians than they killed German troops. It is then no surprise than grieving families were reluctant to see the people who killed their children as heroes.
The Franco-Russian Alliance went back to a Treaty in 1892. The Germans, Austro-Hungarians and Italians had entered into the "Triple Alliance" in 1882, leaving Russia isolated. The French had felt isolated since starting, and losing, the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. So their alliance was a counter-balance to the Triple Alliance.
French were part of the Auld Alliance with Scotland.
At the beginning of 1940 the French and English fought Nazi Germans in the Dunkirk, Calais area and lost. They fought together in France after the Normandy Invasion.
Because the Somme is a river, situated in northern France. And why was the Western Front of WW 1 mostly situated in northern France? Because the Germans had hoped to invade through northern France (thereby avoiding the bulk of the French troops, who were situated in eastern France) and then push on to Paris and western France. But the Germans were fought to a standstill in northern France (that was the Battle of the Somme) and they never managed to break through for the rest of the war.
In the first world war France and Germany were fighting over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
to keep the France out of the u.s.
During WW II, when France was occupied by the Third Reich, Britain retained its alliance with the French resistance.
The United States did not honor the treaty of alliance with France because it had been an agreement with the king of France, not with the new French Republic established during the French Revolution

Hitler demanded that two thirds of France was to be occupied ,by the Germans .The french army was to be disbanded.
The country in which the French and Germans twice clashed is France. The first major clash between the French and Germans was during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, which resulted in the unification of Germany and the loss of Alsace-Lorraine for France. The second major clash was during World War II, when Germany invaded France in 1940, leading to the occupation of France until 1944.
The Germans didn't let the "free French" government run anything. It was known as the Free French government IN EXILE because they had to get out of France and all German-controlled areas. The only government the NAZIs recognized in France was the one that was allied with Germany, the Vichy gov't.
The French were focused on the French-German border, meanwhile, the Germans entered France through Belgium. The Germans were able to quickly flank the French forces, and kept the French pinned until they retreated to England.
The part of France that was temporarily unoccupied. Vichy France - When France surrendered, it agreed to occupation by the Germans. The Germans allowed part of France to be under their control but still governed by the Frence people. Their seat of government was located at Vichy France, thus the name.
The French, Spanish, and Germans... (France, Spain, Germany)
France was occupied by the Germans after they surrendered to the Germans. Some French soldiers made it to England and they fought against the Germans again when the Normandy Invasion occurred. I have added another link for you below.
Well, Serbia started it. The intelligence service of Serbia backed a terroristic organization which assassinated the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his wife. This understandably enraged the Austro-Hungarians, who went to war with Serbia. Then Russia took a hand. The Russians were not obligated, they had no treaty or alliance with Serbia. But the Russians had always though of themselves as "the mother of the slavs". So Russia took Serbia's side against Austria-Hungary. Germany and Austria-Hungary were allies. Germany had wanted this alliance, in response to an alliance earlier made between Russia and France. France had wanted THAT alliance because France was smarting from losing the Franco-Prussian War, a war which France started with the new, united Germany, and lost. After the Franco-Russian Alliance was announced, the Germans then had to plan for a two-front war. If the Germans went to war with either France or Russia, they would be at war with both. The Germans decided that if that happened, they would have to beat France quickly, before the Russians got fully prepared. To beat France quickly, the Germans decided to invade France by going through neutral Belgium. France, Great Britain and Germany were all parties to a Treaty of 1839 guaranteeing the perpetual neutrality of Belgium. Nevertheless the Germans decided they had to violate this Treaty and invade Belgium to get at France, bypassing the French frontier defenses by going through Belgium. The German invasion of Belgium did bring Great Britain into the war. So some Serbians murdered a couple, and the Russians helped the murderers, even though they did not have to. France made an alliance with Russia, which caused the Germans to attack France when Germany went to war with Russia over Russian assistance for murderous Serbs. The Belgians were in the way. But, Germany lost, and as they had been the most effective enemy, and had brought grief and sadness into practically every French home, they were the ones blamed.
