Abraham Lincoln was a volunteer in the Illinois militia. He was chosen captain by his unit. He never saw combat but he did help bury the dead.
As captain in the Illinois Militia during the Black Hawk War in 1832, Abraham Lincoln led a company of volunteers in a conflict against the Sauk chief Black Hawk and his followers. His leadership was marked by his efforts to maintain order and morale among his troops. Although the war was relatively brief and Lincoln's military experience was limited, it contributed to his development as a leader and later influenced his political career. Lincoln's service in the militia is often seen as a formative experience in his rise to prominence.

Rembrandt was hired to paint the militia company, specifically the "Night Watch," because of his reputation as a skilled artist capable of capturing the dignity and camaraderie of civic pride. The painting was commissioned by Captain Frans Banning Cocq and his company, who sought to commemorate their unity and leadership through a prominent and dynamic work of art. Rembrandt's innovative approach, dramatic use of light and shadow, and ability to depict movement made him an ideal choice for this significant civic project.
The painting by Rembrandt that was refused after commission is "The Night Watch" (1642). Originally titled "The Militia Company of Frans Banning Cocq," it was commissioned by the Amsterdam militia but faced criticism for its unconventional composition and portrayal of the subjects. The rejection stemmed from the expectations of the time for formal group portraits, which Rembrandt subverted through his dynamic use of light and movement. Despite the initial refusal, "The Night Watch" is now celebrated as one of his masterpieces.
Rembrandt painted Night Watch in 1642. In 1642, Rembrandt painted the most important work of his career, "The Night Watch." The painting is renowned for three elements: its colossal size, the effective use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro), and the perception of motion in what would have been, traditionally, a static military portrait. It depicts the eponymous company moving out, led by Captain Frans Banning Cocq (dressed in black, with a red sash) and his lieutenant, Willem van Ruytenburch (dressed in yellow, with a white sash).
The painting called "The Night Watch" is a 1682 painting by Rembrandt that depicts a Dutch militia. The painting's actual title in English would be "The Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch preparing to march out" and its colloquial name stems from it being inaccurately thought to be a night scene (due to layers of dark varnish finally removed in the 1940s).
During Lincoln's first tour of duty in the militia he saw no combat but he helped bury five soldiers that the Black Hawks had killed an scalped. It was during this tour that his company elected Lincoln as captain of his unit.
