People's feelings about conscription varied widely depending on their circumstances and perspectives. Many viewed it as a patriotic duty and a necessary measure during times of war, believing it was essential for national defense. Conversely, others opposed it, citing personal freedom, ethical objections, or the belief that it disproportionately affected lower-income individuals. Protests and debates surrounding conscription often highlighted these conflicting sentiments, reflecting the deep societal divisions it could create.
