Because it was the largest invasion ever, almost 180,000 troops and their support vehicles and cargoes arrived on the first day alone.

Ironically Day, so that makes it Day-Day
D-Day generally refers to the day on which an operation will commence. The D-Day in question is named so because it was the start of Operation Overlord and a major part of World War 2.
Without D-Day, there would be no V-E Day (Victory in Europe). The Axis powers crumbled "after" D-Day so without D-Day the Axis Powers might still exist to this day.
Destination 2nd Answer: The true answer is that the 'd' in 'd-day' stands for "day". It could just as well have been called D-0 (zero) because there follows D+1, D+2, D+3 and so on. But you have to admit that d-day is much more useful and understandable than d-0.

Days are labeled D + number. So the day after D-Day would be D+1, the week after D-Day D+7, the month after D-Day D+30, etc.

D-Day was in planning for over 2 years, so it was conceived sometime in early 1942.
D-Day saved Britain from possible invasion so every body welcomed it.
D-Day was the 6 of June,1944. In Operation Overlord each subsequent day was called D +1, D +2, D+ 3 and so on. -The sea landings continued for almost 4 months.
