Japan ruled the island of Formosa as part of their territory from about 1895 until the end of WW2. Part of the treaty ending the war was return of the island to China. The name then reverted to the Chinese and Taiwanese name 'Taiwan' meaning 'Big Island'.

Most Americans today don't realize that Taiwan had its own culture and language before the Japanese occupation and before the mainland Chinese retreated to the island in 1949.
