American and Canadian ships transporting supplies to the united kingdom and the Soviet Union encountered German U-boats (submarines) and other ships which would affect the delivery of the supplies (including food, weapons and ammunition). British planes and other vessels would protect the delivering ships by spotting out U-boats or any other Allied use of transporation that would try and stop the crossing of the Atlantic for delivering ships.
