The Blitzkreig ("Lightning War") was effective because it used tanks, armored cars, and troop carriers to move their soldiers around a stationary enemy. Although the French had spent many millions of Francs building and equipping their feared Maginot Line; in 1939 the Germans simply drove around it, and isolated the French Army defenders. It was also the first time air and infantry attacked together, these were tactics the staid French defenders had no idea how to counter.
