Wernher von Braun was not arrested in a conventional sense; rather, he was captured by American forces at the end of World War II. As a leading figure in Nazi Germany's rocket program, he and his team were taken into custody due to their expertise in rocketry. Von Braun was later brought to the United States as part of Operation Paperclip, where he played a crucial role in the development of the American space program. His controversial past with the Nazi regime, including his involvement with forced labor, was a point of significant ethical debate.

Did Americans take German scientists out of Germany after world war 2?

Yes. Operation Paperclip was the effort to locate German scientists and technicians and whisk them to the US, along with all the examples of their work that could be found, and documents and papers. The Russians were also seeking these people and material, but most scientists preferred, if at all possible, to surrender to the western Allies rather than the Russians. All Germans who could were heading west as the war was ending to stay out of the Russian grasp. All parties were especially interested in the German rocket program which developed the V-2 rockets used to bombard London and other cities. Operation Paperclip was most successful here, as the head of the V-2 program, Werner von Braun, and his most important assistants turned themselves in to American forces, and were in the US within weeks after the German surrender. The US Space Program was built on this foundation - the German scientists and their captured V-2 rockets, which in the US were repainted and renamed the Atlas rocket. ("Ven the rockets go up, who cares vere they come down; "its not my department", say Werner von Braun"). Werner von Braun retired as the head of NASA in the 70s.
