They were agrarian, not industrial.
Also, following the invention of the cotton-gin, which made the cotton-farmers enormously wealthy, they were inclined to put on an affectation of ancient landed nobility, who did not encourage their sons from dirtying their hands in trade or industry. This kept the South even more backward.
