To stop the war in Japan

While there may, barely, be justification for use of the first bomb, a point which has it's disputers.

There can be none for the use of the second with the exception of displaying to the Soviets that the west had them and were willing to use them.

In the minds of many this was a political tactic and not a war strategy.

"Operation Downfall" was the plan name for the invasion and it would have involved 3.5 million allied combat and support personnel.

Every man women and child in Japan were expected to fight for their homeland. The first hour of the main invasion was estimated to have 1,000 battle deaths on both sides. The U.S was estimated to have 1 million in the entire campaign. and Japanese child, women,or men, soldiers or not were estimated to about 4 to 5 million in battle or suicide. The war might have dragged on for 2 more years. Nagasaki(80,000) and Hiroshima(166,000) combined had a casualty number of 246,000 a number much less than if invaded.
