Nuremberg was the unofficial capital of Nazi Germany. It was regarded as the most German of all cities and because of this, it was Hitler's favorite city. Nuremberg was where the Nazis held their famous rallies. The city was bombed by America in January 1945 because of its importance to Hitler and the Nazis, and 90% of the historic part of the city was destroyed.

Because of its association with the Nazis, Nuremberg was chosen as the site of the war crimes trials after the war. Previously, Nuremberg had been the unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation for 500 years.

Legal and humanitarian method of dealing with the German War criminals showed the world that the US and other allied nations meant business using the right methods with the Germans (and Japanese too). The French and Brits were all for instantly executing the Nazis. To the Americans doing that made them no different than the Nazis.
