The belts are called tracks. Normal vehicles, with just wheels, tend to sink easily into the mud when off a paved road, and become stuck. All the weight of the vehicle is pressed into the ground at four relatively small areas, making those areas likely to be pushed deeply into mud by the weight of the vehicle. Even before WWI inventors had realized that spreading the vehicles weight with the use of tracks instead of wheels would keep the vehicle from becoming mired in the mud. These were called caterpillar tracks. In WWI this innovation was adopted for a new use, when battle tanks were invented. The wider the track, the better the vehicle is able to keep from sinking into the mud, but this was not really understood until WWII. The tracks use the same principle as snowshoes, developed by Eskimos, that look a little bit like tennis rackets. The snowshoes spread the weight of the foot over the top of the snow, keeping the foot from sinking into the snow.

Most of the wheels on the side of a battle tank are there just to give support and shape to the tracks. These are called bogey wheels. Only the back wheels on either side are connected to the engine and supply power to the tracks. These back, drive wheels are cog wheels, geared, with teeth. These teeth fit into slots on the inside of the track to drive the tracks around.

Why a wide steel belt is provided over wheels of an army tank?

To increse the surface area of the part of the tank in contact with the ground so that pressure due heavy load due to tank do not make it sink and lets it move faster.

Why a wide steel belt is provided over the wheels of an army tank?

since p=thrust/area,if a wide steel belt(more area) is provided ,it reduces the pressure exerted by the tank on the ground.so,it prevents the tank from sinking into the ground. You may mean the actual tracks. They are engineered of many steel links, often rubber covered to enable the tank to run on many surfaces.

What year was Joseph Hawker father of the tank born?

The date of Hawker's birth is irrelevant, since he was not "The Father of the Tank." Hawker designed a type of three-wheeled tractor with wooden plates on a belt that spread the load of the two rear wheels. His role in the development of the tank was not significant.

Do tanks use pulleys on their wheels in other words is the tread on those vehicles like the rope and the wheels retaining their same function?

Tanks do not use pulleys for their treads; instead, they rely on a continuous track system that distributes weight and provides traction over various terrains. The treads function like a belt, allowing the tank to move smoothly over obstacles while the wheels serve primarily to support and guide the track. While both systems involve mechanisms for movement, the operation of a tank's treads is distinct from the traditional function of pulleys in mechanical systems.
