The Cold War started in 1945 when the leaders of the Soviet Union (no longer in existence) refused to free the nations they conquered and took away from the Nazi Germans. They were supposed to free them, help them establish their own democratic self rule and economy. But, no, the communists took them over and ruled over them for 50 years until the Soviet Union disbanded and Russia became a non-communist country again. The 1917 year was when the Tsar was relieved from his reigning position, executed and the Bolsheviks started Communism in Russia. That did not start the Cold War. The Cold War ended because the Soviet Union fell apart economically and because President Reagan pushed the issue.
The cold war didn't have a specific start or ending time but if i had to give one I'd say that it started right after WWII (1945) and ended in the early 90's, probably 1991, the fall of the Soviet Union.

The two Russian Revolutions in 1917 left the Bolsheviks ('majority') in power in Russia. The end of Russian communism is debatable. The communist ideology was losing favor and losing economically by 1989. The official end of the Communist Party rule was 1991. Many communist-style structures have continued in place long after the end of communism.
