The US Navy's F-14 Tomcats were involved in two dogfights ( both times against Libyan fighters), in 1981 and 1989.

On August 19, 1981, two F-14s from the aircraft carrier Nimitz operating in the Gulf of Sidra were fired upon by two Soviet -built Libyan Su-22 Fitters, swing-wing ground attack fighters. They were promptly dispatched by the Tomcats.

Then on January 4, 1989, two Tomcats from the USS John F. Kennedy, again operating in the same area, were forced take action against two MiG-23s that turned to intercept them each time they made an evasive maneuver. That ended with both MiG-23s being shot out of the sky.

The remarkable thing that has not been mentioned to date is that both times it was an all swing-wing battle. All three types had variable-geometry wings.

The only other kill by a US Navy Tomcat was during the Gulf War when an F-14 shot down an Mi-8 helicopter.

There is a book written by Tom Cooper and Farzad Bishop named Iranian F-14 Tomcats in combat, where it was claimed that Tomcats shot down about 140 Iraqi warplanes but there is no way to verify this.
