Metal lathes should be cleaned down continually during its shift to removed swarf build up - The saddle and headstock should be cleaned regularly especially if they are to be out of action for a period of time i.e. holidays. All carriage areas should be oiled and cleaned as should the bed.

Belts should be replaced at least annually and inspected monthly for wear

The tail stock should be in place when the late is not in use to protect it, and its end bearing oiled frequently. Any checks should be inspected to ensure jaws are free moving and unobstructed and chucks checked for signs of wear and replaced if damaged

All handles and their gauges and screws should be inspected periodically for wear

electrical connections should be protected form water/coolant and damages from sharp objects
