The pit-saw was a system used in colonial America and Canada, and in many other countries, to make planks from tree trunks. A pit about 6 feet deep was dug, and the logs to be cut were trestled over it, Two men would use a huge saw about 8-10 feet long and over a foot wide, large teeth were in groups of 3-4 and were angled to cut fast and remove waste each sweep. One man operated the saw in the pit, with one on top. It worked well and much use was made of these saw-pits.
I've actually seen this in operation at Logging shows around the Pacific Northwest and two strong loggers can make short work of trunks with this system !
Sawyers are people who saw wood. They most commonly use what is called a pit saw and work with the wood in a saw pit using a trestle to hold the wood while it is sawed.
TO operate a pit saw two (2) sawyers are needed. They work as a team. A tree trunk is mounted on trestles and is sawed by the team. One (1) man stands on top of the log, and the other stands in the pit below.
A sawyer is an occupational term for a worker who saws wood, usually with a pit saw. Sawyers tend to work in saw pits or a saw mill. It is also an occupational surname in England.

The person at the bottom of a saw pit is typically referred to as the "pitman." This individual is responsible for operating the saw from below while the other worker, known as the "topman," manages the cutting from above. The pitman's role is crucial for maintaining the flow of the sawing process, often involving handling logs and ensuring safety in a challenging environment.
