To be in dead lumber. To be screwed. My dad used to say this (born 1925). Same as 'up a gum tree' which he also used to say. Meaning in a position where there is no way forward and the current situation is unsatisfactory. From Liverpool UK, but served in the Navy with Americans and spent time in Australia, so he could have picked it up anywhere!
