The term ''floating hotels'' has been used to describe what cruise ships really are -- massive resorts with all of the amenities you would expect to find in land-based hotels, but with many technical differences. Cruise ships don't rely on land based resources such as electricity, telephone, sewer etc. During a normal cruise, the only connection to the port are the mooring lines, which hold the ship safely against the pier.
