trains originally came from mining carts that were used usually on wooden, or lead rails. Oddly enough it just so happened that rollercoasters were developed the same way. When the cart would reach down hill they would use a team of mules or horses to pull the cart back to the mine. Steam engines were around at the time, but weren't very reliable. Eventually the carts were used with steam engines to pull them back up-hill. When the steam engines became more powerful they could move more ore in more carts at a time with just one engine.
