You can't tell by the model number. You can tell by the serial number

I have the same one, it's a 1988. (18HP 6 speed (3 hi/3 lo) 44" deck, right?).

The model number does not tell what year it is. If it is a recently made mower the first six digits of the serial number should give you the month, day and year of manufacture.
