It was not only Hephaestus it was the entre mt olympus and it was reveng for showing fire to humans, me again the 9 yr. old

In elaboration: Because men accepted the gift of fire from Prometheus, and had a hand in tricking Zeus into accepting an unappetizing sacrifice, the king of the Gods decreed that man should also be so deceived (since they could no longer take fire from man as Prometheus taught them the secret of making it themselves).

So Hephaestus molded the woman from clay. She was taught how to be demure by Artemis, how to be seductive by Hera, how to please men by Aphrodite, and how to speak and craft by Athena. Finally, by Eris, she was given an insatiable curiosity. Before she was presented to Epimetheus, the leader of men, she was given a sealed pithos (a large clay jar) in which was contained all the personifications of ill will and evil the world knows. Hermes, before sending her to the men reminded her that she was never to open the jar under any circumstances, lest awful things befall the world.

Even though Epimetheus was warned by his brother not to accept any gifts from the gods, Epimetheus was absent minded, and the gods knew he would take Pandora in. The gods also knew that eventually her curiosity would get the better of her, and Pandora did not disappoint. She opened the jar and accidentally released all the woe and hardship into the world. Acting as quickly as she could, she tried to reseal the jar, but it was too late. All that was left inside was the faintly shining goddess, Hope.
