My service manual is for a 1987-1989 Honda Shadow VT1100, and I recently swapped out motors with a 1996. As far as I know all the way up to 1996 is compatible with just about everything on the bike. I had some minor problems like the studs on the exhaust not being long enough and had to pull those. My original motor set up was a hydraulic clutch, and the 1996 is a cable clutch. The rear engine mount is smaller on the 1996, so it requires a smaller bolt. There is also a change on the emissions system as well that I am still trying to figure out. There is a tube running up the left front side of the crank case cover that I have to find a place to possible connect a joining pipe for another hose on the top of the cylinder head.

The engines are the same, except for engine case paint/finishes.

To check most transmissions on Honda motor cycles you check engine oil. They have a liquid clutch that are in the crank case oil.
