You need a totally different left engine cover assembly with the kick start componenets. Easier just to get a whole moteor with the kick start, which they starting using in 80 or 81....good luck
You do not need a different cover. Actually you can not use a cover from an 81 express on your 80 or older express. It wont fit. 81 was the first year of the kick start and the transmission case is completely different. Anyway you can convert yours to kick start but it requires quite a bit of work. Involves taking the side cover off removing some parts replacing a spring with the correct washers and rebending another spring in a different direction.

No , It would be nearly impossible.
yes. you must be highly mechanically inclined
Yes, you can convert a Honda 400EX to a kick start, but it requires significant modifications. You'll need to source a kick starter kit, which typically includes a kick starter lever, gear assembly, and potentially a new case or cover. Keep in mind that this conversion can be complex, requiring mechanical skills and knowledge of the 400EX's engine system. It's often more practical to consider an electric start or simply maintain the existing system if you're not experienced with such modifications.
The cover to the right of the kick start that has 3 bolts
depends. can you push start it. need more info.
To fix the kick start on a 1986 Honda 250 Big Red, first inspect the kick starter mechanism for any damage or wear. Check the kick starter spring and return mechanism to ensure they are functioning properly. If the kick start is not engaging, you may need to disassemble the side cover to examine the gears and replace any worn parts. Finally, lubricate all moving components and reassemble to ensure smooth operation.
