1. Run engine until normal operating temperature is reached. 2. Disconnect hose behind left side plate. Allow oil to drain completely. Once drained replace. 3. Remove and clean the tappet oil screen located under the plug on the cam case near the rear cylinder tappet block. 4. Remove oil filter. 5. Lube rubber seal on new oil filter with clean engine oil and install oil filter. Hand tighten oil filter 1/4-1/2 turn after seal contacts filter mounting surface. 6. With oil plug and filter tightened, install three 3 quarts (FXR) four 4 quarts (FLT) of recommended grade oil. The oil tank should be flushed with kerosene at the first oil change and at least every second oil change thereafter.

To loosen the crank bolt on a 1989 FXR Harley-Davidson, you would turn it counterclockwise (left). This is the standard direction for loosening bolts. Make sure to use the appropriate tools and techniques to avoid damaging the bolt or surrounding components.
The Oil Drain Hose is located on the leftside under the battery and is clamped to a blind (goes no where nipple) fitting. If you want to drain and change your primary then it is on the leftside under the derby cover.
