the best way to drain gas from a ATV is to pull the line off from the carb and it will drain out through the fuel line. Just make sure you remove the clamp before pulling on the fuel line. If need be you can put an extension With a longer peice of fuel line to wherever you want just turn off the fuel cock before atempting to put on the extension so the fuel is not runing

you can also open bowl drain, usually a brass srew at bottom of carb, turn it out a few turns but not all the way. most bikes have a drain hose from there to underneath frame, takes a little longer but you can easily catch gas in a pan

What should you check first if an ATV backfires and will not start?

There are two possible things that it could be... it is more than likely your gas... if it has set up for any length of time, it is possible that you have bad gas... just drain your tank and put fresh gas in there.. the other is your spark plugs.. you should just go ahead and take them out and clean them really good, with a little bit of sand paper and put them back in and it should be running like new after that... be sure to drain your carb before you put the good gas in your atv.. good luck
