1:time the bottom end to Top Dead Center. to begin, we need to be sure the bottom end is timed. this means we need to set the piston and crankshaft at the very top of its travel, so when the cam is timed everything is correct.

2: go to the engine side where the flywheel is. the left side of the engine will be the cover for the flywheel, and timing marks for the bottom end. when you look at the flat side of the left engine cover, you will see two plugs.

3:remove these inspection hole plugs, which are done by using a big flathead screwdriver. the middle hole is used so you can rotate the engine using a ratchet and socket. the left hole is so you can see the timing marks on the flywheel. so start to rotate the engine, and make sure you hold the cam chain to prevent any binding or damage while you turn the crankshaft.

4: as you are turning the engine over, look through the small left side inspection plug hole. on the edge of the hole, where the threads are, you will see cut outs in the threads that you will use as a pointer. turn the engine slowly, and while looking through the small inspection hole you will see a "T" and a line directly to the side of it. you want the marks in the hole you use as a pointer to point EXACTLY at the line, not the "T"

5: now that the bottom end and piston are timed properly, you can install the cam and cam sprocket. when you install the camshaft, be sure you install it with the lobes pointing directly up. because your engine is a shim type, you need to install the camshaft with the lobes pointing up away from the engine.

6:now, you can install the exhaust camshaft sprocket. install the exhaust cam, and make sure the lobes point up and away from the engine. you will know when the cam is installed right, because your lobes will be at the 2 o'clock position. when the lobes are in the right spot, the lines on the cam sprocket will be exactly side to side. you will notice the lines on the camshaft sprocket will be lined up with the line for the cylinder hear. install the intake cam too, with the lobes pointing at the 10 o'clock position. the lines on the cam sprocket will line up parallel to the cylinder head, and go from side to side. with 7:with the chain on both cam sprockets, and the lines on both cam sprockets side to side, install the camshaft caps. make sure you install them each a little at a time, so the cam comes down as slowley as you can. after the cam caps are on, then you can install the cam chain tensioner.

8:rotate the engine over by hand with the ratchet first, before electric starter. because you rotate the engine first, if there is piston to valve contact, you will feel the engine stop. if the engine stops rotating, then you know there is internal engine contact. if you electric start the engine first, you might cause damage if the time is off, and the piston hits the valves and bends them.

make sure you at least clean the carb, and check it over. if the ATV has been sitting, then don't skip the carb clean. at this point, it is very easy to clean it quickly, before you reinstall everything else. this will ensure your ATV will start without problems.

please let me know if i need to explain anything again, or in more depth for you.

good luck!!
