You can not set the timing. It is determined by the keyway between the flywheel and the crankshaft. It only goes in one place. You can adjust the coil, the valves and the carburetor.
For a Briggs & Stratton model 461707, the valve clearance should be set to 0.004 inches (0.10 mm) for both the intake and exhaust valves when the engine is cold. Ensure that the piston is at top dead center on the compression stroke when adjusting the valves. Always refer to the specific service manual for your engine model for any additional details or specifications.
Lance Briggs is number 55 on the Chicago Bears.
The valve clearance is set by grinding the faces if there is too much clearance or grinding the tip of the stem if there is too little. If it is a OHV engine you can easily adjust the valves. Try going to the link below for a video that shows how to adjust the valves.
For most Briggs & Stratton small engines, the valve clearance is typically set to 0.004 to 0.006 inches for the intake valves and 0.006 to 0.008 inches for the exhaust valves. However, it's essential to consult the specific engine's manual for the exact specifications, as they can vary based on the model and type of engine. Always ensure the engine is cool before making adjustments for accuracy and safety.
0.004-0.006
You have to set the piston at Top Dead Center (TDC). I beleive the lash adjustment (valve clearance) is .004 to .006 in. That means thousandths. Once you have set piston at TDC (valve springs will not be compressed but extended on the compression stroke at TDC). You can now set the lash adjustment by loosening the set nut and bolt. You need a feeler gauge to do this. Set lash on both valves then recheck.
You can adjust the valves on your 17 horsepower Briggs and Stratton engine by turning the adjustment screws. The adjustments screws will determine how much fuel goes into the piston chamber.
Valves 21 hp Briggs and Stratton Intek V Twin can be adjusted by increasing the torque on screw band with a right rotation. This can eliminate some leaking problems.
