That's a pretty broad question, but a good one. It really just depends on your preference. The gas prices have gone lately has placed motorcycles in higher demand lately, and therefore a bike that was probably worth $1000 or so a few years ago now sells for much more than that.

I bought my first bike for $1400. It was a great Honda Shadow 700 with only 10,000 miles on it. It still has a LOT of life left in it and it runs perfectly. If you keep a good eye out then you can find these kinds of deals and get a good bike out of it. I also know a friend who bought one from an old guy for 600 that he has ridden for a few years now. But on average, for a good used bike, I would think $3000-$4000 is a good bet. If you want newer, or more custom bikes, etc, the price only goes WAY up from there. The sky is the limit. But just look around. In the winter they sell for less than the spring.
