it depends on the season u r using it in but the majority of the time it should be 10-40w ATV oil . then u Will have to make a choice of semi-syn or full syn either is fine
10-40w
2 stroke
Yes ,it is a 2-stroke
For a 1997 Polaris Scrambler 400 4x4, the recommended gas-to-oil mix ratio is typically 40:1. This means you should mix 3.2 ounces of 2-stroke oil per gallon of gasoline. Always use high-quality 2-stroke oil and ensure thorough mixing to keep the engine running smoothly.
I believe Polaris only made 300 4x4's with an air cooled 2 stroke, which uses injected two stroke oil. There is no oil in the crankcases. Some of the 400LC motors have a small amount of gear oil in a cavity between the recoil and crankcase for the balancer shaft. Your polaris will have a small dipstick on the right side close to the counter shaft sprocket for the transmission. where is the plug on the 400 4x4 ATV to drain the oil? Isn't the 400 a two stroke? No oil in case.
