it the bottom of the motor on the right hand side you will have to remove the exhaust then take off the round cover then the cover that is under that then there is a round plug that will come out with a tug and then you will find the filter your new filter should come with new o-rings to change out i am looking in to getting an oil relocation kit for mine oh this is for a 2003 vstar 1100
On my 2007 vstar 1100 custom the recommended is 20/50 or 10/40. unless the weather is really hot, the service tech recommends 10/40. make sure it is for motorcycles with a wet clutch.
Use any 15-40 W with JASO MA or MA2 certification. Equally, an oil of same weight with SAE SF or SG certification. It may be possible to use a 10-30 W oil if the engine is in prime condition, or a single weight 40 oil if the engine is very worn.
