What do you need to replace if the speedometer keeps jumping on a 1999 Jeep TJ 4-cylinder or is it as simple as cleaning the sensor?

If it is manual, remove the cable and grease it with speedo grease. If it is electric, it probably has to go to the speedo shop.

How can you fix the odometer and trip odometer on a '92 Ford Crown Victoria 4.6L V8 96K miles when the speedometer still works?

I think it is a manual speedo so take the cable soose at the dash and pull the cable out. Then take it loose at the trans and pull the piece that is broken off out. Go to the parts store and get anew cable and install it with lots of speedo cable lube, If it is electric change the speed sensor. Last answer is incorrect. If the speedo didn't work then it would have been. The problem is with the cluster. Go to your local salvage yard or eBay and get another speedo. Getting closer. It is actually the small plastic gear in the odometer. You can get a new one at odometergears.com or get a whole new cluster.

How do you fix an unsteady speedometer needle on a 1989 Prelude SI?

This is most likely the cable that runs from the speedo to the odo. As it ages, the lubricany dries up and the cable drags and sometimes starts to kink. You can replace this cable by removing the speedo cable from the head and the mount on the transmission (w/ the speed sensor)(mounted on the passenger side of the car right above the halfshaft). Remove the speed sensor and pull the cable out from the trans end. The new cable will be fed from the trans end back up to the speedo. Reattach the speed sensor and mount onto the trans. Install the cable back on the head and you shoudl good to go.

Where does gear oil in a 1989 Nissan Micra go?

You fill gearbox thru speedo hole! remove speedo cable housing ( 1 10 mm bolt) and just below gearbox housing. you have to remove the speedo drive with a small flat screwdriver . get a bit of hosepipe about a foot long and a funnel. put in 3 ltrs from empty. speedo drive is directly below air box.

You have a 1990 Honda Prelude 20s and the speedometer has stopped working How do you fix this?

Owner: Assuming your car is a 5 speed you need to find the speedometer cable and run it back into hole on yop of transmission. GL This is most likely the cable that runs from the speedo to the odo. Install the cable back on the head and you should b good 2 go.

How do you fix a speedometer and odometer on a 1971 VW Beetle?

In neither the speedometer or odometer work, then the best place to look is the cable. Jack up the left front of the car so that the left front wheel is not touching the ground. Take off the hubcap if it hasn't already fallen off. Take a close look at the 'grease cap'...it is at the very center of the wheel/hub. In the very center of that grease cap is a small cable. That cable drives the speedometer. Inspect the connection where the cable runs through the grease cap. There should be a wire cotter pin running thru the end of the cable to hold it in place. If you don't see anything poking thru the hole in the greas cap, then you probalby found the problem. You will have to try to fish the speedo cable end thru the grease cap hole, and fasten it with a wire cotter pin. Give the wheel a quick spin...as fast as you can. Take a real close look at the center of the grease cap...where the cable attaches. Verify that the cable is rotating with the revolution of the wheel. A common thing to wear out is the grease cap. It has a square hole in the end that the cable fits into. A common scenario is for the square hole to get rounded out, and also for the cable to round out...or even both will wear. This is the easiest thing to check. If the cable is not moving with the wheel...then you found the problem. Replace the grease cap and/or speedo cable. If the cable DOES turn, then have a friend look at the speedo and verify it hasn't started working. The next place to look if you have verified the cable is being 'driven' by the wheel is to look where the cable hooks to the speedo. Leave the front jacked up for now. Pop the hook open, and remove the dash cover...usually a black cover attached by a couple small nuts. You will be able to spot where the speedo is right away. Don't bump any wires or anything while you are mucking around in there. Unhook the speedo cable from the speedo by unscrewing the cable from the speedo. Pull the cable away from the speedo, and have your friend spin the wheel. Verify that the cable is turning. If it isn't turning...and it was turning when you checked the grease cap connection...then that means the cable is broken. You would need to get a new cable in this case. But...if the cable is turning, then we can now deduce be elimination that the speedo internally is hosed up. Don't bother trying to fix it...you would need to replace it. Get a used one from a junk yard. Pay close attention to which wires go where. Take a piece of paper and draw out which color wires run to where. Draw it as you see it looking at the back of the odometer. The speedo is attached by 2 screws or bolts on the sides. Loosten them, but not all the way. Twist the speedo...counter clockwise if I remember correctly, and it will come unlatched. Putting it back in is straight forward. Just reverse the dissasembly process. Finally, be careful when working around a vehicle that is jacked into the air. Don't put any part of your body that you don't want smashed under the vehicle at any time.

What would caused the speedometer to go crazy and jump all over the place?

If it is a cable driven system, usually a jerky needle is caused by a dry cable, either replace or lube the cable as it is getting stuck and stopping for a second then getting unstuck and jumping back to current speed. If it is an electronic speedo then it could be a loose connection under the car, usually they tie into the transmission to get speed input. Or could be as worse as a faulty speedo in the dash.

Where does the transmission fluid go in a 1991 Mazda 121?

Hello, I just rang Mazda - about my wifes Mazda 121 1.3 liter manual DB Bubble. They told me that the transmission fluid goes into through the speedo cable. I unscrewed the speedo cable and you will see a bolt that needs to be undone to pull out the speedo gear peice. This peice looks like a tube of metal with a little plastic screw gear on the bottom end. Poor about 2.5 litres of transmission fluid in this should be the correct amount (that's what came out) Put the parts back together again and it should work. to line up the speedo cable onto the tube thing you took out there is a metal notch on the cable that only goes on one way. Hope this helps Ian Macleod
