This has GOT to be good news for all Vmaxxers with bad starting or hot starting issues.
My Vmax would sometimes start first button from cold but often would require several long cranks - together with grinding starter clutch noises before firing. If run hot, the motor would misfire at low revs and stall at stop lights. Restarting the hot motor was near to impossible unless allowed to cool. Fuel economy was down the pan, -20 miles on an average tank.
Trawling the web told me my crank sensor/pick-up coil may be suspect. £380 OEM new part!!!
A bit more detective work and I discovered Vmax motors were also used in a US market Yamaha XVZ1300 - without v-boost. The same sensor (with different letters on the part number) is £175 OEM new.
Then came the eBay search - second hand part from US bike breaker - £16 (+£11 duty).
Now for the fitting:

You will need 2 gaskets - 1 for final gear cover and 1 for Genny cover. Tip bike over to right hand side to save most of oil in engine. Remove footrest and gearchange assembly. Remove lowest bolt on final gear cover - some oil will flow out (approx cupful). Remove final gear cover.

Unbolt sidestand switch to avoid oil damage.

Remove Genny cover - sensor can be seen inside cover.
This is the money shot:

Vmax sensor is on right - XVZ13 is on left.
Sensor is a direct replacement. HOWEVER when soldering connections SENSOR BLACK joins VMAX ORANGE, VMAX BLACK joins SENSOR GREY. This is IMPORTANT! your bike will not run if wired incorrectly.
If you get a result from this fix PLEASE answer this post - other Vmaxxers will be able to find this when searchiing the web.

there is no oil tank on a Vmax motorcycle. The only oil is in the crank case, and the shaft drive.
1998 1200 yamaha vmax
The Yamaha VMax is a cruiser motorcycle released to the North American consumer market in 2008. The maximum speed of this bike was approximately 190 miles per hour.
The Yamaha 1500 cm³ engine is commonly associated with the Yamaha VMAX motorcycle, which was first introduced in 1985. However, the specific year of the motorcycle can vary as the VMAX went through various updates and models over the years, with notable versions released in 1985, 2009, and 2019. To determine the exact year, additional context about the model or features would be needed.
Remove a bolt (hex) from either side at the bottom of the seat. Near the shock.
The Yamaha 1200 motorcycle seat is held in place by four retaining bolts. Remove the retaining bolts and the seat will come off.
Yamaha started making the VMAX in 2008. The VMAX, however, is no longer being manufactured in 2013 though and is out of production at the moment with no plans for future production.
One of the problems with the 1989 Yamaha VMax is the sparking from the spark plug. Another problem is the leaking under the dashboard.
if its a first gen vmax any good 10w-40 motorcycle oil. i use mobil 1 4t motorcycle oil, some will say synthetics shorten the life of the clutch, i never had a problem, just stay away from automotive oil because they don't have the additives for a wet clutch.
