there can be several causes of back firing ,
1. fuel/air mix is wrong .
2. ignition timing wrong ( unlikely unless Ecu caput ).
3. air leak in carb rubbers causing fault no1.
4. hole in exhaust system again causing fault no1.
5. defective spark plug/s .
6. defective coils / HT system.
I hope this helps & You can get it sorted soon.
Good luck

The backfiring is due to leaning out the fuel mixture. You can richen up your carbs a bit either by turning the idle mixure screw, or it may require rejetting your carburetors.
Yes they are the same. The midnight maxim is an all black bike. exhaust and carbs are all black. same bike just no chrome on it.

I own a 1994 Honda Magna 750 which has the same engine as the vfr 750. I experienced backfiring problems. I went to my local auto supply store and purchased a can of Sea Foam. I mixed the prescribed amount in with my gas. I did this until the entire can was empty. I no longer experience backfiring problems. It was an inexpensive quick fix. Sometimes the carbs get varnish in them and may cause backfiring. Sea Foam cleans the carbs and removes the varnish. Hope this helps you.
Major tune up time. Replace plugs and filters and do a valve job. Make sure the carbs are synched. If this fails to improve things, get your carbs worked on.
fuel line routing on 1979 Yamaha xs1100

possible change diaphragms in both carbs.
The Yamaha Raider does not have a idle adjustment based on the fact it has no carbs. It is fuel injected and auto adjusts based on the temperature and fuel delivery.

If there is one it will be located from the main fuel line running from the petcock to the carbs.
J is 1982, K is 1983, carbs are the only main difference I think.
