Watches or more accurately, pocket watches first appeared in the 15th Century and were essentially spring powered clocks. In 1657 the spring balance was invented and gave watches natural beat and improved their accuracy enormously. 1765 was another important year that brought temperature compensation and the marine chronometer, which proved invaluable to sailors trying to find their location on long voyages. There were further developments (lever escarpment and mass production techniques and use of better materials) in the 1850 and 1920. 1969 saw the introduction of the first Quartz watch, followed in 1971 by the first digital watch. 1990 saw the introduction of the first radio controlled watch.
