Both countries began colonies. The Dutch in the area we call New York and the French in the Northeast in what is now Canada.
The French and Indian War was a war that occurred alongside the Seven Years' War in Europe. It began in 1754 and ended in 1763. The British and American colonists fought against the French presence in the Ohio River Valley, and Native American tribes allied variously with the two sides. The conflict in the colonies began as settlers moved farther into the Ohio Valley, and met with opposition from the resident French trappers and Indians. Britain sent support to the colonies, but the colonial militias did most of the fighting.

Slavery began thousands of years ago. It was so widespread that it is now impossible to tell where it began. In the New World, slavery began with the Spanish who enslaved native peoples to work in the mines and in the fields. When too many of them died of disease and overwork, Spaniards imported slaves from Africa. Slavery was pervasive in Europe during the period when the North American colonies were formed. It was not outlawed in England and its colonies until the 1830s.
