This is a very broad question. The term "Latin America" refers to a vast expanse of land that includes many countries, and although they, for the most part, share a common language, there are different cultures and customs.
That being said, there is a history of "machismo" which stems from a patriarchal mentality in which the man should be dominant. More recently, as the world changes and various inequalities are being brought to light, things have changed from what they once were (consider even in the United States when women could not own property or vote). Though there isn't as much gender equality in Latin America as there seems to be in the United States, the concept of machismo seems to be diminishing somewhat. Note that several Latin American countries have already seen women presidents.
