Some New Zealand beaches are safe but many of our surf beaches can be extremely dangerous for swimmers as they have very strong rips that can drag a swimmer out to sea.
Drowning is a major cause of accidental death in New Zealand and we lose quite a few unsuspecting tourists this way.
The West Coast beaches just out of Auckland, such as Piha, Muriwai and Karekare, are particularly notorious and kill not only swimmers but also fishermen who are often swept off the rocks by large waves. The most popular beaches are patrolled by volunteer surf life savers during the summer months. Other than rips & currents New Zealand beaches are safer than our neighbour Australia due to much fewer shark attacks, jellyfish and water snakes.

New Zealand Beaches
New Zealand water is as safe as any other first world country. Water at beaches and lakes are inspected routinely and signs are put up if even a slight trace of contamination is found, to warn the community.
