NZ doesn't have a tropical climate, though it does have rain forests, the main one being at the base of the South Island where rain fall gets measured in feet per rain fall.
Technically, a rainforest is a forest with a very mixed species of vegetation. It does not have to be wet.
Washington state is fairly wet, but with a substantial conifer monoculture, no one would call it a rainforest.
Yep - it does rain. I live in Wanaka among the mountains, and we have a rainfall of about 900mm per year. Haast Pass right on the mountain divide, but only 600m asl, gets 3600mm/year. And Alexandra about 100 km further downvalley than us gets less than 400mm /year. So it is quite variable.
Yes, we have the nikau palm. Rhopalostylis sapida, it is found In North and South Islands, and on the Chatham Island, but not Stewart Island. The southernmost limit is Dusky Bay in Fiordland. It is a lowland tree, found in rainforest. The leaves were found useful by Maori and pioneers as a roof thatch.
To my knowledge there are no nominated Rainforests in New Zealand, but in the North Island, the Tararua Ranges, and the Ruahine Ranges would qualify. Plus probably a few others.
In the South Island, pretty well all of the West Coast from Nelson Province down to Fiordland would be rainforest, and including inland to the watershed of the Southern Alps. In parts the rainfall is measured in metres per year.
We don't have tropical rainforests here, but we do have Temperate Rainforests. There are two that I know of: Westland and Fiordland Temperate Forests.
There are quite large areas of original native forest in New Zealand. In addition there are extensive plantations of exotic trees, principally Pinus radiata.
There is a species of puha native to New Zealand. It is Sonchus kirkii, sometimes called NZ sowthistle or Coastal puha. Quite different from the introduced variety you often find as a unwanted weed in your garden.
