Prayer is a means of communicating with God. He is almighty, and whilst we cannot force Him to respond to what we want, He is often willing to aid us - by His Grace, not by our wishes.
Most Christians will have anecdotal evidence of God answering people's prayers. We may not get the answer we want, because God has an overall view of what is happening in the world - but He will always be ready to listen, grant or comfort us. Prayer can certainly change things.
