All food, plants, animals, and related products must be declared. Animals and animal products can carry diseases. Furthermore, certain species of plants and animals are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and their trade is carefully controlled.

Because of these risks, the Government of Canada regulates the import of certain food, plants, animals and related products to and from Canada.

It is not possible to give a definitive answer for two reasons:

1. restrictions on importing items into Canada are modified from day to day,

2. there are different species of abalone from different parts of the world which may be treated differently,
