It's illegal to distributecopyrighted material for a profit, so I would say no because their is always some kind of charge/fee associated with movie rentals or else the movies would never be returned.
It is best to store these tapes in the sleeve in which they were sold. Remember to remove the plastic wrap. I place mine on a book shelf standing on end away from the tv set and the stereo equipment as the magnetism can erase them. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources such as registers and radiators. Also, try to keep them out of dusty areas and rooms that are too cold or too hot. wjs1632

In 1986, media mogul Ted Turner, purchased the majority of the MGM film and television library. Because of his debt load, he could not keep the MGM name and resold that and a number of other assets but he kept all of the MGM library of pre 1986 films and Warner Brothers pre 1950 library, all of the RKO library and some of the United Artists library. Turner started broadcasting the library on Turner Network Television (TNT) and began 'colorizing' some of the old black and white classics. That wasn't as popular as the company had hoped; upon hearing that Turner was planning to colorize 'Citizen Kane', Orson Wells is quoted as saying, "Tell Turner to keep his goddamned Crayolas away from my film!". On April 14, 1994, Turner Classic Movies debuted as a medium to show the MGM, UA, RKO and WB movies owned by Turner. In addition to showing these movies uninterrupted by commercials, in the intervening years TCM has added to their original library, the public can purchase copies of many of these classics from TCM, but they also work to preserve the original copies of the deteriorating old films in the library.
You can save it to use for playing movies (VHS & DVD) after February 2009 if you don't want to get the converter box. You can also donate it to any local thrift shop. And how about this, save it for the kids to use for their video games - that way their "play" doesn't interrupt your normal TV viewing schedule.
