They were forbidden to settle the newly acquired area. Britain feared another costly conflict with the Native Americans. This did not stop the colonists from settling, but they faced mortal danger in the river valley. The Native American population greatly outnumbered them. Many colonists were killed in that area, before the Louisiana Purchase.
