Distribution of Coal in India

The main coal deposits are found in the Damodar Valley or in the Jharkhand-Bengal coal belt. Raniganj, Jharia, Girdih, Bokaro and Karanpura are the main coal-fields in this area. The other coal fields are found in the valleys of the Godavari, Wardha, Son and Mahanadi. The main coal fields of this region are found in Singrauli, Umaria, Sohagpur, Sonhat, Korba and Raigarh in Madhya Pradesh. Korba and Raigarh in Chattisgarh, Keonjhar and Talcher in Orissa, Chanda in Maharashtra and Singreni in Andhra pradesh.

Some coal is also mined in West Bengal near Darjeeling in the Makum and Lakhimpur areas of Assam.

Lignite coal deposits also exist in Neyveli in Tamil Nadu; the Pallu fields in Rajasthan and in the Raisi area in Jammu. This coal, though of poor quality can be converted into electricity and gas. In Tamil Nadu, about 600mw of thermal power is produced from this coal. Thus ithas proved as agreat boon for Tamil Nadu.

According to the geological survey of India, our country has a coal reserve of about 214,000 million tones.
